In August 2019, Peter Immerzeel started as researcher in organic chemistry at the department of Chemical Engineering, FSCN research centre, Mid Sweden University. He will work with deep eutectic solvents (DES) together with Professor Juha Fiskari in the research project Transform for 12 months.

- I really look forward to work for Mid Sweden University and the Transform research project, says Peter, and I hope that my knowledge and background in cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose can complement Juha’s experiences in pulp and paper processes. I am also interested to contribute in education for students if there is a need, says Peter Immerzeel.

Peter’s main interest in research is wood chemistry, cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose. He has during the past 15 years worked a lot with plant based polymers and analytic chemistry in Germany, Umeå Plant Science Centre, Lund University, Umeå University and Karlstad University. He started his career studying forest science, wood technology, chemical engineering and wood as material.

Background

Peter presented his PhD Thesis called “Characterization of carrot arabinogalactan proteins” at the department of Food Technology and Biotechnology in Wageningen University, Netherlands in 2005. He made his Post doc research in Golm Potsdam, Germany 2005 – 2007, where he studied chemical analysis of xyloglucan from Arabidopsis cell walls. In Lund University he worked for three years with enzymatic hydrolys of hemicellulose and xylan for production of probiotica. Back in Umeå, 2013-2017, he worked with characterization of lignin connections with 2D-NMR and characterization of isotope distribution of wood cellulose and different NMR applications. His latest work experience is from Karlstad University where he worked with the company Renewcell who developed a process to produce dissolving pulp from reject textile fibres as raw materials for new textile fibres.

We wish him welcome and hope he will enjoy working with us. Peter will have his office in campus Sundsvall, S house floor three, together with the researchers of FSCN.
